Fugitive convicted killer surrenders after seeing Examiner profile story

Eddie Shade, 41, wanted for violating his parole on manslaughter and weapons charges, saw his own mug shot alongside a story that ran last week and turned himself in to authorities Friday.
Shade is the third featured “Most Wanted” criminal arrested in less than a month. The other two were captured thanks to tips from readers.
“The Examiner does it again,” said Matt Burke, supervisory inspector with the Capital Area Regional Fugitive Task Force. “He saw his profile and just walked into the marshals’ office and they took him over to D.C. Jail.”
Authorities had been looking for Shade for more than a year after he failed to show up for a court appearance on simple assault charges.
Shade had been out on a parole for the 1990 shooting death of James Lane in Northeast Washington. In that case, witnesses told police that Shade pulled a gun from his jacket and told the victim, “Don’t accuse my girl of taking nothing.”
Shade shot the man once and again after the man fell to the ground, according to arrest records. He then stood over Lane and shot him a third time, saying, “Sucker.”
Shade was charged with murder but pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter and other weapons charges in 1991. He was sentenced to seven to 15 years. He had a criminal history dating back to the 1980s that includes PCP, armed robbery, assault, weapons and murder charges, authorities said.
The Capital Area Regional Fugitive Task Force, run by the U.S. Marshals Service, is composed of 28 federal, state and local agencies from Baltimore to Norfolk, Va. The unit has captured more than 19,000 fugitives since its creation in 2004.
