Kudos: Prince William Co. leads the fight against discrimination

By Sarah Raymond
Special to the Examiner 8/21/08

Prince William County is ahead of the pack in its efforts to fight discrimination. The county’s Human Rights Commission has won both the Virginia Association of Counties and the National Association of Counties awards for 2008.

The Human Rights Commission is charged with receiving, investigating and resolving complaints from victims of discrimination.

In addition to investigating discrimination cases, the commission also mediates disputes. When the agency was told it needed separate agents to deal with mediation and investigation, officials in Prince William County and Alexandria realized they could trade staffers and maintain their objectivity without hiring two new units.

“It certainly fiscally has saved us and the county and the taxpayers money,” said Phyllis Aggrey, executive director of the commission.

The state and national awards lauded the Mediation Swap program for its innovative collaboration.
