AU coach Jones gets extension

By Craig Stouffer

Terms of deal unknown; team returns six seniors

After leading the American men’s basketball team to a Patriot League title and its first-ever NCAA Division I Tournament berth last spring, Eagles head coach Jeff Jones will be rewarded with a contract extension today, according to a source close to the team. The details were not yet known.

The 15th-seeded Eagles lost to No. 2 Tennessee in the first round of the NCAAs, finishing the year 21-12, the best record in Jones’ eight-season tenure. American will return three starters and six seniors this season, including Patriot League Tournament MVP Garrison Carr.

Jones returned to Washington last week from the USO Tour “Operation Hardwood” in Baghdad, Iraq.
